Hello, everyone!
We are excited to link up with Top Ten Tuesdays, hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl.
We have so many books that we love written at least a decade ago that we wanted to focus on a few books that we’ve enjoyed and categorize them by mood. There are more than 10 books. Enjoy!
Adventurous
- Sailor Moon Manga by Naoko Takeuchi. Amazing.
- The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Get a tissue box ready.
Challenging/Informative
- From Eve to Dawn: A History of Women Volume 1. Origins by Marilyn French. I can’t believe how much I’ve learned from this book, and I’m happily continuing the series. I think this could be updated and even more inclusive now, but it’s a good place to start.
- The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin. Everything Baldwin writes belongs in the must-read section.
- A Stranger at Home by Margaret Pokiak-Fenton, Christy Jordan-Fenton, and Liz Amini-Holmes. A must-read.
Dark
- The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. This book really impacted my world view.
- Deathnote by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Disturbing, but you can’t stop once you’ve started it.
Emotional
- Night by Elie Wiesel. Deceptively short read; however, its impact lasts forever.
- If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin. Literally finished a box of tissues with this book.
Reflective
- Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. My all-time favourite book. The theme of adjusting one’s expectations really helped me a lot with some very difficult decisions.
- Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. Again, read this with a box of tissues.

Night is such an impactful book – it’s great to see it on a list this week. I also didn’t realize that Song of Achilles was written that long ago!

Great list, and I like the way you’ve organized it! James Baldwin is such a powerful writer, I loved Beale Street. And Handmaids Tale, Night, and Song of Achilles are amazing books. Thanks for sharing.
Song of Achilles has been on so many lists! I mean.. rightfully so because it’s great!

I do like the way you’ve grouped the books! I loved The Handmaid’s Tale and Great Expectations and have The Song of Achilles waiting to be read.

I like the way you broke your choices out into tone. Great idea. I haven’t read any of these but I have seen The Song of Achilles several times today. Such a popular book!

You have some great books there, Sara. The Handmaid’s Tale, Night, Great Expectations, all fantastic classics that are definitely worth reading.

I haven’t read The Handmaid’s Tale but I did watch the show and yikes! It did make me want to read the book. I want to read Madeline Miller too.

The only one I read on your list is Great Expectations. I didn’t really like the book but mostly because I didn’t care for any of the characters and everyone just seems unlikable but I’m glad you like it.
